Environmentalism as Religion

June 13, 2007
Environmentalism is on the verge of becoming the new world religion (or is already). This is extremely dangerous. Anything that becomes doctrine and forces you to conform with it, inevitably loses all possibility for debate and reasoned discussion. Those that disagree are ostracized and the very real environmental challenges are ignored.
From my perspective, the very real problems of habitat destruction, air pollution, water table contamination, food supply GMO contamination, and overharvesting of the oceans are now playing second fiddle to the threat of global warming - a threat which I think is real but don't think has been clearly established as being man made. If we simply focus our efforts on modifying human behaviour to combat it, we will ultimately fail in truly helping those that will suffer as a result of the warming.
Unfortunately, I think the threat of global warming is being exploited in order to impose a global carbon tax on CO2 emissions. Incidentally, when you breathe you emit CO2 (hmmm a tax on breathing... food for thought). Given the track record of our corporate and government leaders, you can be assured that the money collected as part of the carbon tax will do absolutely nothing to help the environment but will more likely fund further government expansion, global integration and further restrictions on personal rights and freedoms.
Author and anthropology expert Michael Crichton explains why he believes Environmentalism has become a new form of Religion and why that spells bad news for any real environmental threat facing the planet.
